Another role is maritime patrol and providing top cover for Coastguard operations. Most recently on 5th January, ‘Charlie ‘252’ was in action again providing Search and Rescue (SAR) top cover for the medical evacuation of an injured fisherman from a Spanish fishing vessel approx 100 miles off the South coast of Castletownbere, Cork. The CASA diverted from its daily maritime patrol in response to a request from the Coast Guard to provide assistance for the winching operation. The CASA arrived on scene at 11.30 and provided a communications relay between the fishing vessel and ‘Rescue 115’, the Shannon based Coastguard helicopter. The casualty was transferred to Cork and the CASA resumed its Maritime patrol mission before returning to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel.
