TMG Licence

Postby Rudy » Wed May 30, 2012 8:22 pm

Hi,
Is it possible to gain a PPL in a TMG from any flying establishment in Ireland, North or South.
Prefer not to have to do it in a normal fixed wing.
Thanks,
Rudy

Hi Rudy

Thats a very strange request. TMG pilots are generally glider pilots who aquire the aditional rating.

You need to ask the Dublin Gliding Club or the Ulster Gliding Club.

I seem to recall that the Ulster Gliding Club had a H36 Dimona and were offering Motor Gliding training, whether this was the NPPL SLMG (Self-Launching Motor Gliders) or TMG im not sure.

Easa have introduced the LAPL (s) for sail planes and powed sailplanes and a TMG rating an be added to this. There is also a conversion process from NPPL SLMG to LAPL(S)-TMG

Hope this helps

I'd forgotten about Peter's Falke. Definitely worth investigation.

Just one point Rudy before starting a niche rating like TMG in Ireland get written clarification from the IAA that they have an independent TMG examiner available.

Other niche pilots such as Balloonists and Gyro's have experienced great difficulties getting tested as often their instructor is the only examiner in the country and the IAA won’t let an instructor examine their own students even if they are the only examiner in the country.

Yes you can do your PPL(A) on a TMG. Just means that initial issue is with a TMG Class rating. We do the instrument appreciation on our TB9 (SEP) and so it makes sense to get the SEP Class rating as well. The IAA have appointed an examiner so there is no problem with the skill test.
As a general point, the motorfalke cruises at 75kts (140kph) and so is not far behind a C152 or Rallye and has the added advantage of being capable of soaring engine off (lower hire rate!).
If you want to get a PPL(A) with SEP Class rating, the best method is to do the PPL(A) on TMG and then add the SEP Class rating. Overall cost will be less than the PPL(A) on SEP and you will have better handling skills to boot!

We operate mid week as well as weekends and Bank holidays so drop in for a chat.
