Cessna Takeoff Crash |
| The 794-hour private pilot made an uneventful emergency landing on a public highway following a loss of engine power due to fuel starvation. Several attempts were made by the pilot to have the aircraft placed on a flatbed trailer and recovered to a suitable airport; however, the width of the trailer available for recovery was too narrow to accommodate the airplane\'s main landing gear. After several failed attempts to recover the airplane by ground, the pilot elected to fill the fuel tanks with 15 gallons of fuel and, in coordination with local law enforcement, attempt to takeoff from the private highway. Vehicular traffic was stopped in preparation of the airplane\'s takeoff from the highway. During the takeoff roll from the highway, the airplane\'s right wing collided with a side mirror of an 18-wheel truck and then struck the rear of an emergency vehicle. The collision with the vehicles made the airplane turn sharply to the right into a ditch, subsequently impacting trees. |

| http://www.aviationvids.comAnother great video from Dan Linebarger. Here is his commentary: \"Attached is an approach into Big Creek Idaho (U60). Best approach into this strip (wind permitting) is from the North, landing on Runway 19. The runway is higher on both ends, low in the middle. Therefore, be prepared and set up to land on a surface that is sloping away from you on landing. Tie downs and closet toilet are on the south end. This was my first landing here and the approach should have been a bit higher. It\'s an easy walk to Big Creek Lodge. Great outfitter and good food. Aircraft is a 1959 C-172 180hp C/S prop. My co-Pilot and cameraman is Clyde Watson, also from Midland, TX. |

(and viewed millions of times). This clip, however, represents the very first time the crash has been available in HQ. The last clip (which was much copied around the www) was very low rez, although it was hugely popular just in my account alone, with well over 3 million views.I\'ll eventually post more details about the crash here. In short, the pilot ran out of gas in one tank yet didn\'t switch over to the other tank which was full. Checklist fail.
