EXCLUSIVE: British Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Heathrow

http://www.flyinginireland.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,109/task,viewvideo/video_id,499/

(Reuters) - British Airways said on Friday a plane travelling from London to Oslo was forced to make an emergency landing after a fault in one of the engines.

Video footage on Sky News showed the plane at London's Heathrow's airport with smoke bellowing out of its right engine.

"It's right engine was on fire. This plane was coming over and suddenly the tone of the engine changed dramatically. I'd almost say it was like a blowout or an explosion," witness Clive Cook told Sky News.

The airport, Europe's busiest, closed both its runways to deal with the incident, but one has since been re-opened.

A spokesman for the London fire brigade, which attended the incident, said they believed the fire was now out.

"There has been an incident involving a BA aircraft at Heathrow airport this morning and both runways have been closed as a result," a spokeswoman for the airport said. "All passengers have been safely evacuated from the plane in question."

This innovative development by the Swiss aircraft manufacturer marks the creation of a new segment in the business aviation market: the PC-24 is the first business jet worldwide with the ability to use very short runways, paved or unpaved, and a cargo door as standard. The jet also boasts an enviably spacious cabin which can be configured to individual requirements. Thanks to these features, this aircraft is truly a "Super Versatile Jet"

The Air Command single-place gyroplane that I owned from 2001 to 2006. They have also been referred to as "gyrocopters" or "autogyros." They preceded the success of the helicopter by twenty years and helped to solve the riddles that helicopters had, even though the developer of the autogyro, Juan de la Cierva had no intention of advancing helicopter technology.

They use an unpowered, freewheeling main rotor to generate lift, while thrust is provided by a pusher propeller. This machine is powered by a 64 hp Rotax 532, carries 12 gallons of fuel, which is good for about two hours with reserves. It flies around the pattern at 50 mph, and cruises at 70 mph.

This particular machine is not an ultralight, nor is it a light sport aircraft. It was certificated in the Experimental - Amateur built category. A license is required to fly it (at least a solo student signoff). Anything worthwhile to do requires training and this is something that cannot be done by just jumping into it and going for it. There are many of our ancestors that tried the same approach with no success. If you're contemplating flying one of these fabulous machines, find a Gyro CFI or LSA instructor. They can be found on the Popular Rotorcraft Association website under "Flight Instruction."

I found this old video on my computer. It's the first flight in my Airbike after building it in my basement.

I had finished up the paperwork with the FAA earlier that week and received my tailwheel endorsement that afternoon. The weather was perfect and there was nothing left to do but go fly. The monthly EAA chapter meeting happened to be that night, so I ended up with a few extra helpers and a bit of a crowd.

The flight went well, even though my nerves were tested a bit.The guy pulling the starter rope is Wally. He was my SEL power instructor in C-150s. The man shaking my hand at the end is Laird, who was one of the two glider instructors that first taught me to fly.

Except for my first solo in a glider, few have been as memorable as this first flight in an airplane I built myself. It was an excellent day all around.

[EDIT]
A few folks have asked why its called an Airbike. It has nothing to do with bicycles, exercise machines or anime vehicles. It simply because your feet are on the outside similar to a motorcycle. The seat is also narrow like a motorcycle. The company that sold the kits picked the name almost 20 years ago. That's all there is to it. Sorry if you were expecting something else.

We've seen the occasional out-of-the-ordinary car at the gas pump, but never quite like this.

In this video, a two-person ultralight aircraft pulls up at a gas station alongside a highway, tops its tank, and then uses the on-ramp for a short takeoff roll and becomes airborne.

We presume the video takes place in Russia, given its Lukoil pitstop, although the origin of the video is unknown.

If you think that's impressive, you may want to check out the Terrafugia Transition, the flying car unveiled at the New York Auto Show last April.

The Transition, more of a full-bodied small aircraft, is equally capable of pulling up at a car-centric gas station and then taking flight -- perhaps departing from the runway at a local airport instead of the nearby highway.

Utah Plane Crash Captured on Cell Phone by Passenger -ORIGINAL FOOTAGE-

http://www.flyinginireland.com/component/option,com_hwdvideoshare/Itemid,109/task,viewvideo/video_id,459/

2/2/13- I was up for a birthday flight with my wife (her first flight ever), her mother and my seven month old boy when we received the shocking news that our carburator had iced over. After gliding over some field we found an ideal place to land the plane. The pilot was experienced in field landings but unfortunately the snow caused the landing gear to sever from the plane, flipping the plane front to back and smashing the tail before it came to a rest upside down. No one was hurt in the accident save for bruises, whiplash and minor cuts.

More to the story:
The pilot is very experienced and has landed in fields many times before even with snow in the field, just not this much snow. We were looking for roads to land on, but there were just too many power lines next to or crossing these roads. The interstate (large road parallel to flight) can be seen from the beginning of the video, which is a 5 lane road with the middle turn lane. There was absolutely no safe way to land on that road. Had he tried I'm confident that a collision would've occurred and this story could easily have ended in a fatality. The pilot made the BEST landing given the circumstances. Even the way that the plane dug in with its nose, taking the initial force followed by us flipping (instead of a violent abrupt stop) then crunching the tail also absorbing the rest of the collision was the best possible way to crash.
You can see more of the actual destruction to the plane and the way it landed if you look at the other video of the aftermath "Utah Plane Crash Aftermath Wreckage -ORIGINAL FOOTAGE-" located here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sCsIxwMoFw
Crash only + slow motion here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nADiIIaxPw

The Miracle behind the whole Experience:

-Please do not mock any beliefs or the follow story- I can just as easily turn off the option to allow comments. Please be respectful

When we first heard the news from the pilot that we were going to have to land out there my initial reaction was shock and fear. There was an incredible feeling of calm and peace with swept over all of us as we all said our own silent prayers in our heart. It was in that moment as I tried to recall any sort of ill or uneasy feeling before the flight, any kind of 'warning' feelings that I get sometimes to warn me away from when something really bad was going to happen, you know that 'inner feeling'. After I realized that I never once got a bad feeling of warning I knew in that moment that we were going to be ok. I knew that God was watching over us and protecting my family. We belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and we've been taught to listen to those feelings because they are sent from God.
As we descended there wasn't much talking, we just felt calm and peaceful, very peaceful. I fully expected a smooth landing because of that peaceful feeling, and I just KNEW we were all going to be ok- which we were. I just was really shocked when we crashed. I wouldn't have been recording had I even thought we'd crash, but all-in-all we all walked away especially my baby boy who didn't have a single scratch on him. He's the real miracle about this story.
About 1 minute after the crash a family across the street who had been out on snowmobiles immediately came to our rescue and we climbed aboard and they took us to their house to wait for the paramedics to tell us what I already knew- that we were ok and incredibly lucky.

The only Tragedy:
The pilot is a good friend of my wife's parents. He is passionate about flying and loves to take people up in his plane. My wife had never been in an airplane and this was arranged for her birthday. This was a free flight provided by the pilot because of his good heart. The tragic part of this story is that he forgot to renew his insurance on the plane, and it lapsed the night before the flight- 13 hours earlier!!! The insurance company will not honor any kind of grace period and will do nothing for him, so now he's lost a $40k plane in a matter of 13 hours.  He is still happy and cheerful despite his loss.

A video released February 8, 2013 by Jetman Yves Rossy suggests the skydiving innovator may be on the verge of marketing an unpowered version of his strapped-on wing and opening a school to teach people how to fly it. Rossy has earned worldwide recognition for developing and flying a jet-powered version of the wing and has flown that version across major landmarks like the english channel and a section of the grand canyon. Rossy has looped and rolled the powered version and sustained in-flight climbs. Without power, he still displays aerobatic agility in flight -- thanks to his skill, care and proper speed management. Describing the flight you see here, Rossy says he studied the terrain, calculated the angles, and walked segments of his route in advance. In the air, he says he achieved speeds in excess of 150 mph. Like his powered version, Rossy still flies with and lands under a parachute. He believes there is much more potential for this kind of flight. And if his apparent plans become reality, people may soon start lining up to find out.
